Dativ and Akkusativ with Examples

Akkusativ is used with Wohin? (Movement toward a destination).

Dativ is used with Wo? (Location or no movement).

Special Cases:

Some verbs and prepositions always take a specific case:

  • Always Akkusativ:
    durch (through), für (for), gegen (against), ohne (without), um (around), bis.
  • Always Dativ:
    aus (out of), bei (at/near), mit (with), nach (after/to), seit (since), von (from), zu (to).


Wohin? (Akkusativ)

  • Ich gehe ins Zimmer. (I am going into the room.)
    • Structure: Subject (Ich) + Verb (gehe) + Preposition (in) + Article (das → ins = in + das) + Object (Zimmer).
    • Reason: Motion is implied (going into the room), so Akkusativ is used.
  • Ich gehe in die Küche. (I am going into the kitchen.)
    • Structure: Subject (Ich) + Verb (gehe) + Preposition (in) + Article (die) + Object (Küche).
    • Reason: Motion toward the kitchen; Akkusativ applies.
  • Ich gehe ins Bett. (I am going to bed.)

    • Reason: Motion into the bed; Akkusativ is required.

2. Dativ (Dative)

Used to indicate location or position (no movement).

When to Use Dativ:

  • Wo? (Where?)
    • When describing where something or someone is situated or stationary.
    • Verbs often associated with Dativ: sein (to be), liegen (to lie), stehen (to stand), sitzen (to sit), hängen (to hang, when stationary).

Examples:

  • Ich bin im Park. (I am in the park.)
    (No movement; location in the park.)
  • Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (The book is lying on the table.)
    (The book remains stationary on the table.)

  • in (in/inside)
  • auf (on top of)
  • über (over/above)
  • unter (under)
  • an (at/on, for vertical surfaces)
